Benford's Law

From MIKE2.0 Methodology

Jump to: navigation, search

Benford's Law has some interesting applications to Data Quality. The following is a presentation delivered to the ARK Group's "DQ Asia Pacific 2009" conference in Sydney, Australia (March 2009). This is a relatively non-technical yet practical look at the background to Benford's Law and how it can be applied in every day data analysis/data quality activities. It has particular relevance to anyone interested in identifying possible fraud events and also for extending data quality profiling to identify possible errors in data transformation and data migration. A simple method for its application using Microsoft Excel, is also provided, along with real examples of the application of the technique to large data warehouse extracts (6.5 million records), GL record extracts (60,000 records), and even to a small (less than 1,000 record) data set, i.e. the author's own credit card transactions.
