Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence involves the analysis, presentation and delivery of information to business users. The Business Intelligence environment is greatly enhanced by more advanced Information Management capabilities, which can be used to enable event-based decisions and analysis.

Foundation Capabilities are essential for ensuring the quality of information that is presented, ensuring ease of access and the performance of the Business Intelligence layer meets the needs of the user community. Business Intelligence is the component within the Enterprise Information Management Architecture that is dedicated to supporting and improving decision-making within an organisation. Fundamentally it helps organisations extract information from their data assets.

Decision Support Analysis

Decision Support Analysis relates to the facilitation of decision-making through information discovery tools. This capability is delivered via ad hoc querying systems, which support users deductive analysis processes.

Decision making power is being pushed down the ranks within many organisations around the world. This trend has emerged from the realisation that faster decision-making power allows an organisation to be more agile and competitive in the market. As a result, information discovery tools are no longer the sole domain of senior managers.

These tools range from simple query tools offering drill down analysis, to sophisticated artificial intelligence software providing data mining capabilities. Due to the complex and ad hoc nature of decision support, usability and performance are key issues.

Integrated Reporting is a key capability offered though BI. This capability is not just about supporting an organisation’s reporting needs, but increasing organisational confidence by providing single, uniform representation of an organisation’s data.

Even though BI offers a wealth of capabilities, the most ustilised and valuable is integrated reporting. This fact is not hard to digest, given that an integrated enterprise reporting architecture enables an organisation to improve the day-to-day management of its operations and organisational units.

Coupled with the SAFE architecture components focused on the Technology Backplane, this approach enhances an organisations standard reporting framework by offering the same reports over an integrated information architecture to provide a holistic view of the company. Different types of Integrated Reporting include:

  • Transactional Reporting that concerns itself with measuring the volume of business activity of the company. These are usually broken down by channels, geography, departments, etc.
  • Functional Reporting that concerns itself with the performance level of business functions. These may include volumes, productivity, average duration, achievement of service levels, etc.
  • Analytical Reporting that attempts to discover new business knowledge, patterns of behavior, complex relationships and other things from a body of data by pulling together results from detailed data analysis and mining. It usually requires the association of data from a variety of sources.

Executive Dashboard

Executive Dashboards are a specialised BI capability aimed providing decision makers with a visualisation of the status of their organisation. These tools strive to deliver quality information, not quantity.

Executive Dashboards are usually web portal-based, graphical displays of key performance indicators, structured as an executive information system. They allow you to visually keep track of overall company’s or business unit’s performance. They also provide easy drill down to the lower level information elements, if deeper detail is required. Executive Dashboards are often used to display Balanced Scorecards.

An Executive Dashboard is similar to a car’s dashboard, in that it needs to provide the viewer with vital information within a short period of time. These tools often display information that is summarised, graphed and colour-coded. When information is presented in this manner, the rate of absorption increases dramatically.

Since executives are powerful discretionary users, customisation and usability is of particular importance. The information presented will vary from manager to manager, and in turn so will the method of delivery. The delivery method of executive dashboards varies from sophisticated web pages to a simple daily email.
