=External Data Sources

The External Data Sources Assessment documents the major points of entry of data into an organisation from outside sources. The External Data Sources Assesment is defined during the Organisational QuickScan for Information Devleopment Activity. It is defined at the source and subject area level. Key information that should be gathered is listed below.

In addition, each data source should be assessed in terms of three three key metrics described in Small Worlds Data Transformation Measure: average degree, average geodesic distance and maximum geodesic distance.

Populate the model External Data Sources against each of the the criteria described below. Populate this model in a progressive fashion and ideally store content in a tool that can be query and reported against.

Name of the third party that is supplying the data

Subject Area

Title associated with the type of data and business subject areas in the data

Brief statement that gives the purpose of the external data brought into the organisation

Update Frequency

Classification of the frequency external data is refreshed

Technologies associated with the data - database, load mechanism, operating system; includes sizes and appx. record counts

The specific data model or format of the data source, including its serialization (e.g., XML, JSON, CSV, etc.)

Associated Applications

Applications that use the loaded external data

Level 1 & 2 Functions

This attribute maps the external data to the associated application through the end-to-end process model for both Level 1 (Functions) and Level 2 (Processes). This attribute is repeated for each instance.

Divisions/business clusters supported by the external data

Issues & Limitations

Key problems associated with the system

External Agreements

This attribute contains high level points contained in the contractural agreement with external data source if applicable

Data Owners

Key contacts from a business ownership, technology architecture and operations perspective

Daily User Count

The number of users and the areas and regions they work in with some measurement of the time spent in usage of the system

The number of transactions that occur, batch or non-batch mode and other characterizations of the transactions
