A Folksonomy is a casual form of a taxonomy. It is also often referred to as collaborative tagging or social tagging because it is rooted rather in the aggregate of user contributions than in a well designed, prescriptive system as defined in a taxonomy. Folksonomies emerge over time and theoretically become higher quality with a greater contribution community, using the principle of the wisdom of crowds.
