Foundation Capabilities for Information Development cover the modelling of data and metadata as well as the capabilities required for resolving data quality issues. They are essential capabilities for a number of projects and are in many ways the most crucial topic over the MIKE2 methodology.

Many of the Information Development capabilities are dependent upon one another and are performed in a process-driven approach for data re-engineering. They should typically be performed in the early stages of project implementations and be used throughout the project lifecycle (including post-deployment).

Foundation Capabilities for Information Development can be used to process large stores of data, selectively conforming the data as needed. Vendor tools can be use to provide a set of integrated modules for accomplishing data re-engineering tasks such as investigating, conditioning, matching, building relationships, resolving conflicts, and formatting data.
