MIKE2:MediaWiki Extensions

There are a number of extensions to MediaWiki that can be used to extend its core functionality. Some extensions have been brought into the MIKE2.0 framework that hosts the methodology, whilst others are tools that can be used to help import and export content. There are always new extensions and tools being built for MediaWiki; extensions can be found on the MediaWiki site

Importing Content

There are multiple editing tools that can be used to help load content from different forms into the format used by MediaWiki. Some tools include:

Exporting Content

Pages within the wiki can be directly printed to a PDF from within any article page. In addition, tools exist to export MediaWiki content into other document formats, such as WikiPDF which is an extension for MediaWiki, which converts Mediawiki-articles to LaTeX or PDF.

A coomplete list of currently used MediaWiki extensions can be found on Special:Version. Below is a highlight list with some key extensions used for MIKE2.0.

Extensions by the MIKE2.0 Development Team

  • Select Category Tag Cloud extension improves the category management of articles. Users can assign categories to an article from a category tag cloud and retrieve existing categories via a category suggest feature. This extension was developed by Andreas Rindler.
  • Scuttle Bookmarks extension provides one of the key pieces of functionality to create a single, integrated content repository. It enables MIKE2.0 to display bookmarks from MIKE2.0 Openmethodology Bookmarks (OM Bookmarks) in a simple text box within an article page. This gives our MIKE2.0 Wiki users access to all bookmarks on OM Bookmarks that have been shared by our large community of Information Management professionals. To see an example, take a look at the Master Data Management category page. This extension was developed by Andreas Rindler.

Extensions you can install

  • Open Methodology Bookmarks extension provides one of the key pieces of functionality to integrate public, external assets into a MediaWiki based collaborative environment. You can install this extension in your environment in order to displays bookmarks from MIKE2.0 Openmethodology Bookmarks (OM Bookmarks) in a simple text box within an article page. This gives your users access to all bookmarks on OM Bookmarks that have been shared by our large community of Information Management professionals. This extension was developed by Andreas Rindler.
  • Scuttle Bookmarks extension provides one of the key pieces of functionality to create a single, integrated content repository. You can install this extension in your environment in order to display bookmarks from a private social bookmarking installation of Scuttle in a simple text box within an article page. This allows you to link in private assets into your collaborative environment without having to recreate or duplicate your existing private asset infrastructure. For example, if you have an internal Sharepoint based document sharing environment, you can simply bookmark these assets in your private social bookmarking installation. And these bookmarks will then also be available on your wiki page, hence, providing a single, intrated view of all your assets. This extension was developed by Andreas Rindler.

Extensions from the MediaWiki Community

  • ReCaptcha extension protects the user registration from spam and non-human registrations.
  • Newest Pages Blog extension adds an includable special page which shows the most recently created or updated pages on the MIKE2.0 Wiki, in weblog format.
  • The CategoryTree extension provides a dynamic view of the MIKE2.0 wiki's category structures as a tree - it uses AJAX to load parts of the tree on demand.
  • Cite allows provide an extension to add bibliographical references to any article page in the MIKE2.0 wiki.
  • CreateArticle helps users more easily create articles through a message box interface.
  • ShareThis is an extension which provides links to popular social bookmarking and news sources for articles on the MIKE2.0 wiki.
