From MIKE2 Methodology
Enabling Technologies provide advanced capabilities to implement next-generation functionality along the Technology Backplane of metadata management.
Enabling Technologies are not mandatory, but compliment metadata Foundation Core capabilities by providing standards and pre-packaged abstraction layers to simplify implementation and deployment of Metadata Services. Enabling technologies provide implementation frameworks or approaches for foundation capabilities and often integrate foundation capabilities into a common interface.
There are many standards and enabling technologies available and emerging in the industry. The fit and applicability of any Enabling Technology must be assessed.
Modelling
Modelling is the basis of metadata management. The ability to describe business structure and process at several levels of abstraction is a necessary to build the Metadata Management Foundation capability. Several technologies and standards exist to aid model management capabilities that extend to modelling notations, frameworks, methodologies and modelling tools.
Architecture
Metadata Management Architecture defines the bonds between components and services in the metadata framework. The evolution of Metadata Management as a formal Information Development discipline has spawned reusable logical and physical architectures that can assist in the development Metadata Management strategy. OMG’s Model Driven Architecture is an example of an architectural framework which can define the structure of a Metadata Management system.
Interchange
Interchange standards define how Metadata Management Services and components interact within the system on a conceptual and physical level. Leveraging metadata interchange standards support a robust and extensible Model Driven Architecture.
Deployment
Deployment of capabilities is a crucial component of Metadata Management implementations. In combination with Interchange standards, Deployment technologies assist with the integration of Metadata capabilities in existing Applications.
