From MIKE2 Methodology
Metadata Repositories are the physical persistence of metadata and implement the basic capability of metadata storage. Metadata can be persisted in a variety of formats including database management systems, file systems and a programmatic interfaces. Each implementation will have its benefits, but the foundation metadata management capabilities should be protected from the details of storage by a transparency or abstraction layer. This is the fundamental principle of a model driven architecture and allows metadata to be viewed by components and users in a platform independent manner.
