From MIKE2 Methodology
Process Automation provides fulfilment of both long-lived and short-lived business processes. Long-lived processes tend to be tightly-coupled (e.g. fulfilment of an order) whereas short-lived processes are loosely coupled (e.g. synchronization of customer contact data). Long-lived processes oftentimes involve human interactions; short-lived processes are more likely to be fully automated.
Whereas in the past these capabilities tend to be provided by different products, vendors are converging towards a single product for automating short-lived and long-processes. Further convergence is also occurring around products for Application Integration and Data Integration and products for Business Process Management.
In the Services Oriented implementation of the SAFE Architecture, de-coupled processes interact through CMM Messages. A reusable, workflow-driven solution means that new processes can be implemented without touching the existing systems and can leverage existing process library templates and existing services.
