A Subject Area is a logical grouping of entities around a business concept. The term Subject Area is a term most often used in Data Warehousing; a Subject Area-based approach may help drives requirements, scope and delivery increments.

Developing and agreeing on a single definition for a Subject Area is important. Vague phrases or terms can influence the relationships created between data elements when subsequent data information models are created to support the Subject Areas. They also influence how the Subject Areais interpreted and mapped against the Business Architecture; loose definitions result in a Subject Area being associated with too many business groups/functions, which negates the intent of defining and aligning the different architectures.
